SCHOOL READINESS AND EARLY LEARNING CENTER
The Irvine School District works collaboratively with both parents and professionals to provide an array of services which help families and early care providers develop skills that build strong families with healthy children, ages birth through five, who are learning and ready for school. The services are

* Counseling for Parents
* Kindergarten Physical Exams

Effective Parenting: Active Parenting Now
Being a parent today often seems more difficult than ever before. Kids and families face social and emotional pressures far different from those in the past. Positive parenting skills and healthy family communication are more important than ever. If you have children from 2 to 12 years of age, give yourself the gift of this award-winning, 7-week skills workshop to gain confidence in your role as a parent and to improve relationships in your family. Learn effective alternatives to punishment, eliminate power struggles, increase positive communication and learn crucial life skills. Help kids develop responsibility, self-discipline and resiliency.

Effective Parenting: Active Parenting of Teens
This 7 week class is for parents of children age 12 or older. Learn effective ways to instill courage and self-esteem, deal with negativity, develop responsibility, win cooperation, give consequences, increase positive communication. This workshop will help parents address challenging topics like values, sexuality, alcohol and other drugs. This series will help you gain confidence, make sense of your teen's behavior and attain real, practical skills. $35 per person/$45 per couple.

Effective Parenting: Active Parenting for Stepfamilies
New! This three-session workshop will teach parents and stepparents skills needed to build a successful stepfamily. Using the video and discussion program of the same name, parenting expert Dr. Michael Popkin explores a proven approach to parenting that will help bring happiness and harmony into your home. Learn how to blend family histories, traditions and values, establish parental authority using non-violent discipline techniques that work, improve communication and build new relationships based on respect and trust. Prevent power struggles and set boundaries that work for your whole family. Leave the session energized and ready to make positive changes in your own stepfamily! Registration Fee: $35 per person/$45 per couple.

Effective Parenting: Parents, Kids and the Law
The laws have changed dramatically, and knowing the consequences for even minor mistakes or actions is essential. Knowledge IS power in making effective choices in life. This two-session workshop will cover: New laws kids should know, trends and your individual rights, why good kids make poor choices, bullying behavior issues at school, Internet problems, shoplifting, common arrest issues for kids, and prosecution of 14-year-olds as adults. Cheri Wood, IUSD Parent Education and Support Specialist, will review common problems and issues that can cause good children to get into trouble. Parents and their children 3rd grade or older may attend. Workbook of California laws for youth included in fee. Registration Fee: $35 per person/$45 per couple; kids attend free.

Helping Your Child Succeed in School - Motivating Your Child
What influences your child's attitude at school? What do his actions really mean? Help him become a more successful student and live up to his full potential by learning how to interact with your child in a way that builds his self-esteem, confidence and success. Identify and alter ineffective ways of interaction and recognize the warning signs of underachievement. Team up with his teacher to encourage your child's investment in school and increase academic success. $25 per person/$35 per couple.

Helping Your Child Succeed in School/CBET/Elementary Course A
Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) is a tutorial training program offered to parents of school-age children or members of the community through IUSD. The program's goal is to empower parents with the support necessary for them to become active participants in their children's education. Classes do not have to be taken in any order and parents may take more than one class at a time. No fee.

Course A (Elementary School): Overview of the IUSD School System, learning effective parenting skills and use of teaching methods that help parents tutor more effectively.

Helping Your child Succeed in School/CBET/Elementary Course B
Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) is a tutorial training program offered to parents of school-age children or members of the community through IUSD. The program's goal is to empower parents with the support necessary for them to become active participants in their children's education. Classes do not have to be taken in any order and parents may take more than one class at a time. No fee.

Course B (Elementary School): IUSD standards-based curriculum for K-6 students will be surveyed and practiced using reading, math, science, and social science content.

Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) is a tutorial training program offered to parents of school-age children or members of the community through IUSD. The program's goal is to empower parents with the support necessary for them to become active participants in their children's education. Classes do not have to be taken in any order and parents may take more than one class at a time. No fee.

Course D (Elementary School): Focuses on the history, culture and resources of both Irvine City and Orange County. Local resources, hands-on experiences and field trips provide parents with information to enhance their child's education.

Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) is a tutorial training program offered to parents of school-age children or members of the community through IUSD. The program's goal is to empower parents with the support necessary for them to become active participants in their children's education. Classes do not have to be taken in any order and parents may take more than one class at a time. No fee.

Course A (Middle School/High School): This course provides information about available community services, information on the American/IUSD systems, and includes tips on how to encourage good homework habits.
